As many of you already know, I am, shall we say, less than graceful.  You have often seen me with bruises, scrapes, scratches, or at the very least have heard a few wailing "OW's" from the library.

So what better way to spend a Friday evening than to barrel down a mountain on a snowboard for the first time in seven years with nothing but hope and prayer as my guides?

Despite the freezing temperatures and my lack of skills, I managed to avoid seriously injuring myself and had an enjoyable time. Not saying I didn't fall at all of course: My first time down the 180 was spent staring at the stars... and not because they were pretty. Although, if you're going to slam yourself against a mountain side, there really isn't a better sight. It also helps to distract from that really annoying group of 8 year olds who ski past you giggling. Jerks.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip. Of course, you probably wouldn't believe it if you saw  me before Tuesday. Snowboarding is hard. I turned, I twisted, and then I limped for three days.

Students: Good luck on this week's Regents exams. And if you have no exams, enjoy the break. I will see you all on Monday morning, where I will continue to amaze you at my ability to injure myself with manila folders and fleece jackets.

Nyzire's artwork was also on the COVER of the reception's pamphlet!
On Friday, January 18th, our  very own                                                                                                Nyzire McCray attended an "Art and Essay Celebration" at Siena College that featured student submissions celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Nyzire was excited to be a part of the event, but even more excited when he found out that Ms. Wawrla (the art teacher) had made copies of his artwork and sold it to the teachers! All of the funds from the sale of the posters was given to Nyzire.

Stop in the library and/or the main office to see Nyzire's work that was featured at the event, and make sure when you see him you say CONGRATULATIONS!

And to Nyzire: all of us at the ALC are so proud of you!

I hope you all enjoyed your break, and that you are ready to get back to work! Of course, I may be slacking a little bit... so if you see me looking disoriented, just know that teachers are humans, too (I know, SHOCKING- I barely believed it myself). Make sure that if you are in one of my classes, you remember to print off all of the Apex study guides and check off in the binder what you have finished. The Gradebook will be closing in just a few short weeks!
Also, if you find yourself struggling this week- please remember:
              It's a 3 day week!

This post will be updated as new Students of the Week are Selected!

For January 14-18

The High School student of the week is Nyzire McCray. If you talk to Nyzire, you will find that he is often "just chillin'" - all day, every day. Of course, that must not be all he is doing, because a drawing of his was just featured at a Siena College event! To find out more and see the featured work, click here.

The Middle School student of the week is Alphonzo Stringfellow. This is Alponzo's second time receiving student of the week. Clearly his hard work and ambition are paying off!

Congratulations Nyzire and Alphonzo!

For January 7-11
The High School student of the week is Dave Watson. Dave has been working hard to complete his work and be successful in his classes. Even if he does not see eye-to-eye with everyone, he is quick to move on from the issue with a positive attitude; this is a rare quality for any teenager to have! Many teachers have commented on Dave's behavior and work ethic, which has consistently improved.

The Middle School student of the week is El-Jastar Scott. El's teachers have commented on his positive behavior and hard work. He is constantly working to improve, which is shown in the  work he has completed. It has also been said that El-Jastar has been using his leadership qualities to contribute to the classroom, which has influenced his peers positively as well!

Congratulations Dave and El-Jastar!

For January 2-4
This may have been a short week, but the following students would deserve it anyway!

The High School student of the week is Dominick Luhr. Dominick is one of the friendliest students at the ALC. He is always ready to work in his classes and is a great writer! He was chosen because of his exemplary attitude and work ethic.

The Middle School student of the week is Alphonzo Stringfellow. Alphonzo not only completes his work, but does it well and with a positive attitude. He takes pride in the work he accomplishes and is also polite, respectful, and just plain awesome!

Congratulations Dominick and Alphonzo!

For December 17-21st

The High School student of the week is Majeeda Dickson. Majeeda has been working diligently in all of her classes and always has a smile on her face! She was chosen because of the work she has been accomplishing and the positive attitude she always strives to exhibit. Congratulations Majeeda!

 Quarter 2 Ending
Students! The quarter ends on January 25th. BUT that is Regents week. So the last opportunity to hand in work to your teachers for High School students will be January 18th. Please ask your teachers how to hand in work beyond that date. Middle School students: regents week is a regular school week for you. So take advantage and get your assignments in!

 Interim 2

Well people, the gradebook closed for interim 2 on December 14th. By this time, students should be aware of what their grades are, and if they need to, are getting ready to make up assignments (if their teacher allows) or prepared to get back to the grind for these final few weeks!

I will post an update when I find out when Quarter 2 grades are due. For now- keep working hard and stay aware!
